CASE STUDY

UX / UI Design // Instructional Design // Drug Vial Kit

CHALLENGE

This project focused on designing two instructional manuals for a syringe and drug vial adapter kit. The goal was to create clear, user-friendly guidance that enables caregivers to accurately and safely prepare and administer injections. The manuals needed to simplify a complex, multi-step process while ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.

PROBLEM TO IDENTIFY

Caregivers often face challenges interpreting dense or technical instructions when performing medical tasks. The key challenge was identifying how to visually communicate the critical steps of injection preparation and administration in a way that minimized confusion, reduced errors, and supported safe use of the kit.

PROCESS

Step Documentation & Risk Analysis - I collaborated closely with the Senior Designer and User Researcher to define and document the injection steps from a caregiver’s perspective. This process combined use-related risk analysis with subject-matter expertise to ensure that each step was accurate, safe, and clear.

Content Hierarchy & Illustration - Once the steps were finalized, the Senior Designer structured the content hierarchy, and I led the creation of detailed illustrations. I determined which visual information was most critical to communicate at each stage, ensuring that caregivers could follow instructions intuitively.

Concept Development & Presentation - We developed three layout concepts to present to the client. Each explored different ways of organizing the instructional content and supporting visuals. Feedback was used to refine the designs and optimize clarity and usability.

RESULT

The final manuals adopted a layout that separates information by function: the top row for standard Instructions for Use (IFU) content, followed by another row dedicated to step-by-step visuals and guidance. This structure enhances readability, allows caregivers to quickly process complex instructions, and reduces the potential for errors, ultimately improving safety and confidence in using the kit.
