CASE STUDY

UX / UI Design // Baby Hearing Screener App

CHALLENGE

This project focused on redesigning a critical hospital application used by clinicians to screen newborns’ hearing. The application supports an emotionally sensitive moment for families while requiring speed, accuracy, and clarity for medical professionals. The goal was to improve usability and efficiency for clinicians without compromising a calm, reassuring experience for parents and caregivers.

PROBLEM TO IDENTIFY

The existing application relied on complex workflows and dense information, which created friction for clinicians during screenings and patient management. There was an opportunity to improve the information architecture, streamline key tasks, and introduce a more cohesive and accessible interface—one that aligned with both clinical efficiency and the emotional context of newborn care.

PROCESS

Research & Foundations - The redesign began with a thorough review of previous application iterations, the client’s established brand guidelines, and the official hearing screener manual. These inputs ensured all design decisions were grounded in regulatory accuracy, visual consistency, and real-world clinical workflows. This phase helped identify what was working, where friction existed, and what requirements needed to remain unchanged.

Information Architecture & Workflow Mapping - Working closely with the Senior Designer, I helped restructure the application’s information architecture to better support clinicians’ core tasks. We mapped key use cases and clinical scenarios to understand how users move through the screening process and manage patient data.

A primary focus was simplifying these workflows to reduce cognitive load and eliminate unnecessary steps.

The clinical workflow and quick test workflow examples illustrate how different screening scenarios were visually supported across the application.

Design System & Component Library - To ensure consistency and scalability, I contributed to the development of a cohesive component library aligned with UI best practices and accessibility standards. This system allowed for predictable interactions, faster design iteration, and a more intuitive experience across all areas of the application.

Guided by the client’s brand palette, we selected a calming teal blue to convey trust and reassurance, reinforcing a sense of care during a sensitive clinical moment.

Workflow Refinement & Usability Optimization - Based on the workflow mapping, we refined screen layouts and interactions to prioritize clarity and efficiency. Each step in the screening process was intentionally designed to guide clinicians forward with minimal friction, allowing them to focus on patient care rather than navigating the interface.

RESULT

The redesigned application delivers a streamlined, accessible experience that supports clinicians in performing newborn hearing screenings efficiently and confidently. The final high-fidelity wireframes present a clear, consistent workflow that improves usability while maintaining empathy at the core of the experience.
